I remember the first night home with my first baby like it happened yesterday. I wish I could tell you that the memory is of staring fondly at my baby, feeding him once or twice in the middle of the night, and being surprised at how well he slept!
The reality is, I was recovering from an unexpected c-section after several days of hard labor, having an unusually difficult recovery, unable to sit myself up or get myself out of bed without help.
My clearest postpartum memory is of my hungry baby crying from the Rock ‘n Play next to the bed, me unable to move to get him, and my poor husband sleeping so soundly after our marathon birth experience that I was literally punching him and screaming his name and he STILL wasn’t waking up!
“Send night help!” I yelled. There had to be a better way. Like any new parent, I started Googling:
HELP AT NIGHT!
I quickly found that a “night nurse” was just a person who fed your baby at night with no actual nursing experience and that a “night nanny” didn’t know how to care for newborns. Regardless, they didn’t exist around Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, or Springfield, according to Google.
Fast forward to today, I am determined to fill that need for new parents. I staffed Heartland Doulas with the best Postpartum Doulas, experts in all things postpartum and parents and babies. And then, last month, all of our doulas completed additional training as Newborn Care Specialists, in order to truly be experts in all things newborns and feedings and multiples. Our postpartum doulas are available around-the-clock to provide the exact care our clients need. Imagine being able to get a solid stretch of sleep, waking to find your bottles and / or pump parts all washed and your baby (or babies!) well cared-for, all by a compassionate expert who supports your parenting and feeding choices. Welcome to postpartum doula support, and welcome to Heartland Doulas!
